Aruna is a fisheries assessment biologist who worked on estuarine and coastal shrimp and finfish fisheries in the tropics. Educated as a fisheries biologist in Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom, he worked for the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) of Sri Lanka for 15 years. He joined the Maliseet Nation Conservation Council (MNCC) in 2007 as the Science Director. As the Science Director of MNCC, he conducted several programs to increase Wolastoqey participation in the conservation and management of natural resources in the traditional territory of Wolastoqey First Nations. Since 2023, Aruna has been working as the Executive Director of MNCC and is responsible for the overall management of programs conducted by MNCC to evaluate aquatic resources in the Wolastoq watershed and associated coastal areas.
